Patient Wins Sailing Trophy

September 2006

I have sailed since I was young and even after my stroke, which gave me severe problems on my right side, I was keen to have some "me" time out of physio, doing something I enjoy. The Royal Yacht Association run a fantastic sailing scheme for disabled sailors and I attend the Sailability group at Frensham Pond during the summer every Thursday and also on Sundays, when I sail with my husband, who is new to dingy sailing.

The facilities at Frensham are suitable for even the most severely disabled and nothing is too much trouble for the army of volunteer helpers. I normally sail a two man Access dingy and find it easy to control the tiller and mainsail with my functional arm.

In September the Access National Championships were held at Frensham and nearly 40 boats from all over the country completed in a series of races over the weekend. My husband and I were thrilled and surprised to come second overall. I was also awarded the Endeavour Trophy.
