Professional Excellence Recognised at the Life After Stroke Awards

 Regional nominees are honoured at the Stroke Association Regional Awards Ceremony. 

Hobbs Rehabilitation was nominated by Laura Wright of Liphook, Hampshire, who at the age of just 26 suffered a stroke whilst undergoing an operation on her brain tumour. 

Speaking about her journey after the stroke, Laura said “In the weeks after my stroke I was advised to buy an electric wheelchair, to lessen my ambitions and just accept that speech was simply not a realistic goal for me, that the best we could hope for was maintenance, not progression. How times have changed? I am now happy to talk to other patients and can offer them encouragement. 

“My walking has improved massively, my arm is making significant improvements, my speech is something I’m really proud to have conquered and I’m very happy with the successful progress of my rehab which has certainly been progressive rather than maintenance! Hobbs offers a ‘one-stop shop’ so when I needed a Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Orthotist, they were all accessible providing seamless, coordinated input as and when I needed it. This removed a lot of the stress for my family who would have had to do a lot of the sourcing for me at a difficult and stressful time for all of us.”

The Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Awards (LASA) 

commend carers, volunteers, stroke clubs and health professionals who are with stroke survivors every step of the way and work tirelessly to reduce the impact that stroke can have. This award recognises exceptional service in the provision of stroke care and prevention. 

Esme Mutter, Regional Head of Operations South Central, added “We were thrilled that so many of our community in the south were nominated to receive a Life After Stroke Award. Our regional event highlights the tremendous courage local people like Laura have shown in rebuilding their lives after a stroke, or in helping others to do the same.” 

Nicky Ellis, co-founder added, “Stroke rehabilitation is at the forefront of what we do at Hobbs and we were thrilled to have raised over £17,000 this September for the Stroke Association by hosting our 10-Year Anniversary Ball”.
